The Turners, Kathy & RichardI am often just how did Richard and I get into this world of 'Rocks'. Finally I decided to jot it down, just make a diary of our adventures.
We have always loved to travel. Starting to travel even before we got married in 1995. This is one of the things that drew me to Richard. Seeing places and animals first hand is a passion I can trace back to early childhood. He had been all over the USA with his parents and Sis being his Dad built street rods. I had not been so lucky and most of my trips only got me a few states away from Tennessee. Early in our marriage you could just see a nature program or even an old western and he would say “Want to see that in person? Can you pack in two hours?” Off we would go, jumping in our car or suv we had at the time. One such trip took 88 hours of driving time and landing us in Alaska. Yet that's a story for another day. This time we had set out to see animals. I think our destination was Yellowstone. If you have never been you can't miss it. It is a must see place. Literally we have been there at the time of this writing, almost 20 years into our marriage, around 12 months. So when I say a must see I mean it. Back to the story. He had seen Pikes Peak many times with his folks and wanted me to enjoy it as well. I had more physical problems then with my legs. This was before the back surgery. I had became very tired and didn't feel like walking anymore. We had been looking for Dahl Sheep. I had only seen pictures in magazines and really wanted to see one. Richard said he would keep walking and if not too far come back for me. If it was, he would make me my very own picture of one. I sat in the car and waited patiently for him. He was gone for a long time. Now I know this is a habit. He gets so involved in looking around that time is lost. Finally he arrived but instead of a picture he had something in his hand. It was a small rock, black, transparent with a shine (Smoky Quartz). How nice it was sparkling in the sun looking so innocent. Richard said he had always liked picking up rocks as a child. I said me too. We both had kept a few collecting them as kids. We talked a bit and thought it might be fun to look around for them as we traveled. Little did we know how it would consume all of our spare time. Actually took over and we now just see other things on the side. But oh, what a time we have, oh what all we see, I would not trade being a ...........
